Resource package
With funding provided by Cancer Australia, the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council of NSW together with Cancer Council NSW, have developed patient resources specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders affected by cancer. The resources include eight fact sheets and a booklet of stories from Aboriginal people affected by cancer.
The fact sheets focus on cancer support following diagnosis and include information on what cancer is, treatment, palliative care, practical support, talking to health professionals, natural therapies, treatment decisions, and looking after someone who has cancer. The booklet, Aboriginal cancer journeys: Our stories of kinship, hope and survival contains stories from Aboriginal people affected by cancer. It includes personal insights and words of wisdom to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with an insight into other people's experience of cancer. The booklet includes a pocket in the back cover to accommodate the individual fact sheets.
The resources are available for distribution to patients, their family, and carers via Cancer Council Helpline and Aboriginal health workers throughout Australia. Each fact sheet is available on an A5 pad of 50 sheets for health workers to distribute individual sheets to patients and their families. The pads are also available to Cancer Council Helpline staff throughout Australia to use individual sheets for individual callers. The resources are also available for download via the Cancer Council NSW website.
