Principles for providing postvention responses to individuals, families and communities following a suicide death (2008)

Description

This booklet aims to assist organisations, service providers, and communities to respond appropriately to a suicide death. The booklet provides information on the following three areas:

• principles to help organisations and services providers to respond appropriately to a suicide death
• principles to help communities develop appropriate coordinated postvention (action taken after a suicide) responses
• resources available for bereaved people (people in mourning), services providers, and the media.

This booklet is not an Indigenous-specific resource but does include information on how to respond to suicide deaths in Indigenous communities. The Queensland Department of Communities developed this booklet, and two similar online resources, as part of its commitment to the Queensland Government suicide prevention strategy.

This booklet should be used by organisations, service providers, and communities as a guide on how to respond appropriately to a suicide death. The information in this booklet should be used as a starting point for responding to a suicide death and may need to be adapted to meet the needs of the local community.
