Description

The Alcohol and pregnancy and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder resources for health professionals include:

a booklet
a fact sheet
a wallet card.

The booklet is the first revision of the Alcohol and pregnancy: health professionals making a difference (2007) booklet, and aims to suppport health professionals in their role in addressing women's alcohol use before and during pregnancy. The booklet provides information in relation to:

women's alcohol use before and during pregnancy
the consequences related to alcohol consumption during pregnancy
strategies to Ask, Assess, Advise, Assist, and Arrange support for women
health professional resources related to alcohol use during pregnancy.

Expected outcomes for health professionals include:

understanding why women consume alcohol before and during pregnancy and the consequences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy (including knowledge of the conditions that make up fetal alcohol spectrum disorder)
recognising the importance of recording women's alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy
offering brief intervention to those women drinking alcohol during pregnancy and appropriate referral for those women who need further suppport.

The fact sheet is a snapshot of the booklet and the wallet cards are designed to be given to pregnant women.
