Journal article
This journal article on treatment guidelines for bipolar disorder has been developed for mental health professionals. It describes treatment options for the different phases of bipolar disorder as well as options for particular population groups. The guidelines are based on a review of the literature on bipolar disorder treatment outcomes and discussions with mental health professionals and patients. These guidelines are not Indigenous specific guidelines but they will be relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with bipolar disorder.
Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract
Mental health professionals should use this information as a guide when treating adults with bipolar disorder. Practitioners should use this as a guide only because the choice of treatment for someone with bipolar disorder will depend on the skill of the practitioner, and the patient's preferences and personal situation.
