Description
The Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council of South Australia Inc. has produced this toolkit covering all aspects of petrol sniffing and other solvent use in Indigenous communities. There is a manual consisting of a number of booklets which contain basic health information, examples of successful programs, teaching resources and information about where to go for further assistance. The manual is presented as a boxed set which includes:
- Booklet 1: Plain Language Summary - for people interested in learning about petrol sniffing or other solvent use
- Booklet 2: Information for Health and Community Members - contains more detailed information about petrol sniffing and is for workers who are helping communities to deal with sniffing issues
- Booklet 3: Community Development - for workers and includes a workshop outline
- Booklet 4: Other Solvents - for workers who are working in communities where sniffing of other solvents (paint, glue) are an issue.
- The Brain Story was developed in Central Australia by the Petrol Link-Up Project (Territory Health Services) and uses Aboriginal pictures to show the effects of petrol sniffing.
- Petrol Sniffing in Aboriginal Communities: A Review of Interventions (by Peter d'Abbs and Sarah MacLean) is a review of published and unpublished literature addressing petrol sniffing in Aboriginal communities in Australia.
A companion DVD and Video of the workshop which ADAC developed to introduce the
manual are also available; see links below.
