These guidelines on depression have been developed for health professionals and other service providers who work with young people aged 13 to 24 years. The aim of the guidelines is to ensure those working with young people have the knowledge required to identify depression in this population, provide appropriate support and treatment, and refer where necessary. The guidelines are informed by evidence-based research and cover the range of depressive disorders as well as related issues, such as substance use disorders.
The guidelines cover the following topics:
The guidelines were developed by an expert working committee convened by beyondblue, in consultation with a range of experts, stakeholders, and consumer representatives. This is not an Indigenous specific resource.
Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract
These guidelines are relevant to a range of health and related workers in various settings, who work with young people aged 13 to 24 years. This includes health and service providers, such as general practitioners, psychologists, community healthcare workers, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers as well as those working in the school setting, such as teachers and counsellors. The use of the guidelines will depend on a person's profession and level of skill and knowledge. It is important that young people and their families and carers remain at the centre of all care provided.
