Description

This 7-minute educational DVD informs Indigenous families in north Queensland about the importance of cyclone preparation.

The DVD conveys key messages about cyclone preparedness by telling the story of two Indigenous families and the contrasting ways in which they equip themselves for the cyclone season. The first family does very little to prepare, while the second family works as a team to complete tasks from a cyclone preparation checklist. The DVD uses real footage from 2011's Cyclone Yasi to create atmosphere and to emphasise the potential severity of a real cyclone. The DVD is accompanied by an illustrated booklet, and includes a table of items to include in a cyclone kit.

The DVD was distributed to communities in the Townsville area in October 2012, prior to the start of the 2012/13 cyclone season. Although this resource is specifically developed for families in the Townsville region, is could also be used to promote cyclone preparedness to Indigenous communities in other parts of the Top End. An online version of the DVD is available via the links below.

The DVD was developed by the Townsville City Council in consultation with local Indigenous communities, Indigenous corporations and James Cook University. It was developed with funding from the Community development and recovery package, a joint initiative of the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Natural disaster relief and recovery arrangements. A version of the DVD has also been developed for migrant communities.
