Adolescent health: enhancing the skills of general practitioners in caring for young people from culturally diverse backgrounds, GP resource kit: 2nd edition (2008)

Description

This kit is a guide for general practitioners (GPs) for the effective delivery of health care to adolescents from culturally diverse backgrounds. The majority of the content is applicable to GPs working anywhere in Australia.

The skills and strategies outlined in the kit are organised into four sections:

• understanding adolescents
• skills for youth-friendly general practice
• creating a youth-friendly general practice
• youth health resources and contacts.

The kit includes templates for conducting:

• adolescent health checks
• youth health risk assessments (HEEADSSS)
• youth-friendly practice reviews.

The kit takes a biopsychosocial approach to working with young people and their families. It encourages GPs to consider the developmental, cultural and environmental factors that impact on adolescent health.

The kit is endorsed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and General Practice New South Wales (GP NSW).
