This manual provides information on the mental health rights of people living in New South Wales who have a mental illness. The manual has been written in plain language to help those with a mental illness understand their rights, the legal and service system, and how to access support and guidance. This manual is aimed at all Australians living in New South Wales, but includes information specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The information in this manual would empower people who have a mental illness by helping them to understand their rights as well as the legal system and the mental health service system. Health workers could pass this manual on to their clients or could use the manual to explain to clients what their rights are and where they can access more guidance or support.
