This presentation focuses on transgenerational trauma in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. Transgenerational trauma refers to issues of grief and loss which are passed down through generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families as a result of traumatic experiences. The presentation addresses the question of 'How does the past have anything to do with now?' and discusses what approaches are needed to help heal the trauma.
The presentation is delivered by Shane Merritt, a lecturer at the University of New England and Aboriginal consultant to the Australian Child and Adolescent Trauma, Loss and Grief Network (ACATLGN).
Abstract adapted from Australian Child and Adolescent Trauma, Loss and Grief Network
The information covered in this presentation would be valuable for mental health practitioners with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, as it would help them to understand the grief, loss, and trauma experienced by many of their clients.
