Depression yarns: tackling depression and anxiety in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities [DVD] (2010)

Description

This DVD tackles the subjects of depression and anxiety. It aims to increase awareness and understanding about the effects of depression and anxiety on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and how these conditions can be addressed. The DVD contains seven segments which include:

• the stories of two health workers and how they approach depression when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women
• the story of an Australian rugby league player and his personal battle with depression
• drama skits of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander man and a woman, and their personal struggles with depression
• a debriefing of the two drama skits
• information on recognising the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The DVD was developed by Beyondblue, the national depression initiative. Free copies of the DVD can be arranged by contacting Beyondblue.

When to use this resource

This DVD is appropriate for both health professionals and their clients. Health professionals could use the DVD to learn different approaches for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have depression and/or anxiety, and to gain insight into the lives of people with these mental illnesses. The DVD would also be useful for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people with depression and/or anxiety in helping them to recognise the signs and symptoms of these illnesses and to learn how other people have managed their depression or anxiety.
