The process of breathing and how the lungs work is a complicated process in our bodies. This resource uses pictures and diagrams to show:

• how people breathe
• the organs used when people breath
• how the different parts of the lungs are used in breathing

It brings together complex medical information in an easy to understand pictorial way. The resource is written in plain language.

When to use this resource

This booklet is designed to be used to start a discussion about breathing and about things that can affect a person's breathing, such as cigarette smoke, asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases. The health worker should allow plenty of time for people to look at the pictures, and can use actions to illustrate the text. The booklet can be used when talking one-on-one or in group situations.
