This program provides an overview of cancer issues relating to Indigenous women. It can be purchased as a video or DVD or viewed online.
The program provides information about:
- The increased relative mortality of cervical cancer and breast cancer among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and the likely reasons.
- Evidence-based interventions to address these health issues, in particular general practice-based initiatives aimed at improving access to culturally appropriate and effective early detection and management of cervical and breast cancer.
- Increasing the commitment of health professionals to:
- Identifying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients
- Improving the knowledge and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women regarding their risk from cervical and breast cancer and the priority of early detection of these conditions
- Understanding barriers to screening
- Providing culturally appropriate early detection services
- Liasing with other service providers to improve the follow-up and management of women with cervical and breast cancer screening abnormalities
