Overview

This program was established to address the lack of respiratory disease services in Dharah Gibinj Casino, NSW.

The program aimed:

• to raise awareness of lung disease in the local Aboriginal communities
• prevent smoking related chronic respiratory disease
• improve the health outcomes for Aboriginal people suffering from respiratory disease

The objectives of the program were to:

• establish evidence based services targeting prevention and disease management
• train staff in smoking cessation, assessment and management of respiratory diseases
• provide access for the local Aboriginal population to culturally appropriate services

The key elements of the program were:

• lung health and disease awareness
• respiratory assessment clinics
• smoking cessation support
• pulmonary rehabilitation

The Australian Lung Foundation provided support for the program through their Breathe easy, walk easy program.
