Overview

The Indigenous employment program (IEP) is delivered through the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and aims to halve the gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade. The program is the key strategy within the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) National partnership agreement for Indigenous economic participation that was signed in 2009.

The IEP is intended to make services more responsive to the specific needs of Indigenous job seekers, Indigenous businesses and employers. The aims of the program include, to:

• support employers, especially small and medium businesses, including pre-employment training and mentoring, an
• target regional areas and specific industries experiencing labour shortages
• provide assistance to develop plans to recruit and retain Indigenous employees.
