Mindframe national media initiative

Overview

Commencing in 2000 and funded by the Department of Health and Ageing, the Mindframe national media initiative was developed to encourage the responsible reporting of mental illness and suicide in the media. Recognising the media can have a strong influence on public attitudes, the initiative seeks to minimise the stigma associated with mental illness by promoting accurate and sensitive reporting of mental illness and suicide in the media.

The Mindframe national media initiative is composed of a number of projects including: Mindframe media and mental health; Mindframe for the mental health sector; Mindframe in the law enforcement sector; Mindframe stage and screen; ResponseAbility journalism; StigmaWatch and the SANE media centre; and Media monitoring. The projects are delivered by several contracted service providers including the Hunter Institute of Mental Health, SANE Australia, and Multicultural Mental Health Australia.

Numerous publications pertaining to the different projects have been produced through the initiative. Resources designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and the Indigenous media have also been developed by the Mindframe national media initiative. A section of the Mindframe website is also dedicated to Indigenous Australians where information is presented on the following subject areas: facts and statistics; mental health; suicide; reporting issues; and contacts.
