Active Kooris club

Overview

The Active Kooris club is about doing gentle gym and other forms of physical activity. The Indigenous clients are mostly those who are in home care, who have chronic illnesses, mobility issues or who are just elderly.

The Active Kooris club is held at the Melbourne Aboriginal Youth Sport and Recreation Cooperative (MAYSAR) gym. The program is run in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service, while the gym is funded by the Australian Government Indigenous Sport and Recreation Program.

MAYSAR General Manager, Glenda Thorpe plans to make the gym more of a multi-purpose social and recreational centre which helps to tackle some of the big Koori community health problems, like diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
