The Martu elders patrol monitors local drinking areas in Newman, Western Australia, to identify people at risk of causing harm to themselves or others as a result of excessive drinking. The patrol provides assistance by referring these people to drug and alcohol support services and promoting a 'bush trip' to help prevent future excessive alcohol consumption.
The patrol aims to reduce littering, street drinking and public drunkenness by patrolling the local area.
The Martu elders patrol operates under the Martu Elders Patrol Shared Responsibility Agreement. This is an agreement between the Attorney General's Department, the Department of Education, Science and Training, the Department of Communications and Information Technology, the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Western Australian Police Service, BHP Billiton, Newcrest Mining and Macmahaon Contracting Pty Ltd.
