'No more runny ears and mop-up' - evaluation of a comprehensive case management support program for prevention of hearing loss associated with otitis media with perforation in Indigenous children 0 to 5 years of age (a randomised controlled trial).
Overview
No more runny ears and mop-up, previously known as Close the perf, is a project that aims to reduce the prevalence of acute otitis media with perforation (AOMwiP) and associated hearing loss in children 0 to 5 years of age. Interventions for the prevention of AOMwiP includes regular review (well child checks), immunisation, vaccines, hygiene interventions, early diagnosis and appropriate case management of acute otitis media (including advice on hygiene strategies, communication and minimisation of the impact of hearing loss).
Objectives of this project are:
- To update current systematic reviews relevant to prevention of otitis media in high-risk populations.
- To update current recommendations for management of otitis media in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
- To conduct a randomised controlled trial of a case management support system (diagnostic and management algorithm) for children with a diagnosis of acute otitis media with perforation (AOMwiP).
- To conduct annual community based surveillance of ear status in all children less than 2 years of age, to be compared with data from PCIS.
