Gascoyne Aboriginal community consultation

 

Overview

The Gascoyne Aboriginal community consultation provided an opportunity for Indigenous people in the Gascoyne region to participate in planning aimed at assisting youth to achieve their goals in school, training and work.

Joan Whitehead, Health Promotion Officer of the Gascoyne Aboriginal Health Unit, consulted with Indigenous people through the creation of a reference group. The reference group was pivotal in engaging community members and encouraging them to share their ideas on how agencies can assist Indigenous youth.

A set of recommendations were produced to inform agency planning for Indigenous youth. The five main recommendations were:

The consultation process was documented in detail to inform and strengthen future community consultation methods with Indigenous people.
