Overview

The WA AIDS Council (WAAC) runs an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community development project to provide holistic and culturally appropriate services for, and with, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Western Australia.

Four main areas direct the focus of the program:

• holistic health - focus on physical, social, emotional, and cultural wellbeing
• self determination - involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in all aspects of health care delivery
• right to choose - the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to choose models of health care with programs designed to meet their specific needs
• culturally appropriate and accessible health care services.

The WAAC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community development project focuses primarily on HIV positive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and heterosexual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women. Population groups that are of secondary concern include: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander transgender/sistergirls; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay men; and the larger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
