Overview

Nindilingarri Cultural Health Services, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, conducted a pilot program aimed at improving the nutritional status and health of the people in the Bayulu community. A similar program was planned for the remote communities of Wangkatjunka and Yakanarra, and perhaps others in the area, upon the successful completion of the pilot program.

The goals of the program were to:

• improve food access and availability in the Bayulu Community
• increase the knowledge and skills of community members about nutrition
• increase the amount of healthy food eaten by the community.

The strategies used to reach the goals included:

• consulting with the community to make improvements in the store, including a store policy
• employing a retail expert and dietician to advise the store and the community
• training local people to work in the store
• training the Store Committee to help run the store more efficiently
• conducting a media campaign
• conducting school and community education programs.
