This competition encourages Indigenous bands to write songs about road safety issues facing them and their community and perform the songs in a play-off at the Barunga Sports and Culture Festival, Northern Territory, each year. The Road safety song competition aims to improve road safety awareness for Indigenous people as well as promote cultural engagement.
A compilation CD of the 2006 and a DVD of the 2007 festival have been released, featuring the winning road safety songs and other music from Barunga.
The Road safety song competition has expanded to the communities of Yuendumu, Ramingining and Milingimbi in 2011, with festivals planned for 2012.
