Deadly treadlies
Overview
This bike rebuilding program for young people is run by the Alice Springs Youth Accommodation and Support Services. Young people are given the opportunity to build a bike for themselves or a family member. The program aims to:
- facilitate skills development with young people
- provide them with positive, practical experiences in bike mechanics
- engage them in meaningful longer term activities
- and help increase young people's self esteem and independence
The positive and innovative work of the Deadly treadlies program has been recognised through many awards. These awards include:
- 2004 Givewell Best Charity Project Award
- 2005 Ministerial Achievement Award from the Northern Territory Government for services to crime prevention amongst young people
- 2006 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award
- 2006 Territory Tidy Towns award for Best Youth Project
- 2006 Bicycling Australia Achievement award by the Cycling Promotion Fund
