Let's get physical - Broome style

Overview

Let's get physical - Broome style was a culturally appropriate exercise program for Indigenous women with diabetes or those who were at risk of developing diabetes.

This was a pilot project and was established in response to the rising number of diabetes and heart disease cases among Indigenous women in the Kimberley in Western Australia.

The project was conducted over a 12 month period commencing in 2003 and included:

The program was promoted in a number of ways through a marketing campaign and a short video was produced to promote and encourage healthy lifestyles in other Indigenous communities in the region.

This was a successful program that continued for a period of time after the 12 month trial was over with funds from other sources, partnerships and resources.

The project was delivered by the Kimberley Public Health Unit with funding provided by Healthway.
