The Menzies School of Health Research are undertaking a research project the Forensic approach for reservoir identification for serious Staphylococcus (S) aureus infections in Top End dialysis clients (STARRS).
The project aims to:
The basis for the research is the collection of longitudinal S. aureus carriage isolates from participating renal dialysis patients and clinical and project staff, and to compare these with isolates associated with S. aureus infection in the same renal dialysis patient cohort. The comparison will be by whole genome sequencing. This will inform on going efforts to refine infection control practices to minimise serious infections in Top End renal dialysis patients.
The project will run from 2012-2014 and is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in collaboration with the Royal Darwin Hospital.
