The Mingga Patrol plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of intoxicated people in the Roebourne region of Western Australia (WA), who may be at risk of harm, are transported to a safe place. Children and young people, who may also be at risk are also offered transport.
The service, run by Yaandina Family Centre, aims to reduce contact between people and the criminal justice system (primarily arrest and incarceration) by addressing issues of antisocial behaviour and alcohol and other drug use. The service also aims to develop strong collaborative relationships with the local medical services, police and other community services.
In addition to the patrol, Yaandina Family Centre also offers a Shelter, which provides a safe haven for community members over the age of 18 who are intoxicated and are at risk of harm, or engaging in antisocial behaviour. Clients can enjoy a comfortable bed, clean clothes and a good meal. Importantly, they can constantly be supervised by staff on duty to ensure that their health is okay.
