Development of a diagnostic instrument for FASD in Australia

Overview

The aim of this project was to develop an instrument (set of tests and measurements) that could be used to diagnose Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in Australia. Currently, doctors often miss or are unaware of the key clinical criteria for the diagnosis of FASD. Early and accurate diagnosis will improve health outcomes and quality of life for individuals with FASD and their families.

Development of a diagnostic instrument for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) in Australia was conducted by the Australian FASD Collaboration, which included health professionals, researchers, consumer and community members.

A two-volume final report was submitted to the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing in May 2012.
