Overview

The National telemedicine project aims to serve as a platform for eye health professionals to share information on effective strategies in tele-opthalmology.

The project's committee is made up of a broad representative group of eye health professionals involved in telemedicine across Australia, including:

• optometrists
• ophthalmologists
• eye-care nurses
• other eye health workers.

This committee will teleconference several times a year to:

• share and discuss each state's successes and difficulties in establishing telemedicine platforms
• formalise guidelines, protocols and operational procedures
• support telemedicine funding applications
• assist with service planning
• collect essential data.

The information obtained from the National telemedicine project will be disseminated via committee members to their colleagues in their respective states. The committee will act as a platform for advocacy in tele-opthalmology at a government level into the future.

This project is supported by the Indigenous and Remote Eye Health Service, an initiative of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists, and funded by the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health.
