Overview

The aim of this program was to reduce volatile substance use (VSU) in the Wugularr community in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory. A youth worker was appointed by Sunrise Health Service to collaborate with community members to develop a culturally appropriate program to address the issue of VSU.

The resulting program provides mentoring services and activities to groups of young people from the community, which include:

• a referral process that sends clients to the Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services (CAAPS) to participate in their volatile substances rehabilitation program
• organised trips to Emu Springs to re-engage in cultural activities such as hunting, fishing, visiting sacred sites and learning the stories
• increasing the number of after school activities occurring on the community.
