The Broome mental health unit provides acute psychiatric inpatient care to people in the Kimberley and Pilbara, in northern Western Australia (WA). Aboriginal mental health staff are on hand to help bridge the gap and support the cultural needs of patients.
The unit is fully integrated with Broome Hospital and managed by the Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service, which coordinates community based mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) services in the region. The unit's development was funded as part of a multi-pronged strategy to boost mental health services in the Kimberley.
