Getting about Aboriginal bus licensing program

The Getting about Aboriginal bus licensing (Getting about) program facilitated the safe travel of community members by training individuals, selected by their community, so that they are able to drive buses to sporting events, funerals, or other gatherings.

The program enabled 10 Indigenous people in the Lismore area to get a light rigid (LR) or medium rigid (MR) license, and about 20 learners to get their P-plates. Getting about additionally aimed to reduce the number of people facing minor misdemeanor charges as well as increase employment opportunities.

A user-friendly driving manual that can be accessed via smart phones was also be developed as part of the project.

Getting about was coordinated by Lismore City Council and ACE Community Colleges, and funded by Transport for New South Wales. The project was run over 12 months.
