The Yuendumu mediation and justice committee is a community-led group operating in the Yuendumu Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory (NT). The committee is supported by the Central Desert Shire.
The committee consists of respected Yuendumu Elders who meet to discuss the sentencing of Yuendumu offenders awaiting charges in their own Warlpiri language. The Elders have the capacity to make recommendations to the NT Magistrate's Court regarding sentencing, and put forward any concerns they may have. The Magistrate's Court visits Yuendumu bi-monthly. The Elders also discuss strategies to promote community safety and address family violence.
