Koori prisoner mental health and cognitive functioning study

Overview

The Koori prisoner mental health and cognitive function study was an initiative under the Victorian Aboriginal justice agreement (AJA) - a partnership between the Victorian Government and the Koori community to address Aboriginal over-representation in the criminal justice system.

The aims of the project were to:

The project involved a literature review and interviews with Koori prisoners and stakeholders. The literature review focused on the social and emotional wellbeing of Indigenous Australians within the context of the criminal justice system. It found a lack of culturally validated mental health assessment tools, and a focus on the illness aspects of mental health instead of positive protective factors. The review recommended future studies focus on the social and emotional wellbeing of prisoners, and employ culturally informed methods of mental health assessment.

The Koori prisoner and stakeholder interviews resulted in a series of recommendations for both the improvement of current service systems, and the improvement of current clinical practice for this population.
