The Our body, our community, our choice (In our own words) project is run by Queensland Remote Aboriginal Media. With funding received under the Community level initiative program, part of the National binge drinking strategy, young people in remote Queensland will be given the opportunity to develop their own radio programs about alcohol use. Issues around binge drinking will be discussed, and positive lifestyle choices will be promoted by showcasing the skills, abilities, talents and culture of Indigenous youth in these remote communities.
The audio segments developed for this project will focus on promoting, in a culturally-appropriate and locally-relevant manner, greater awareness among remote Indigenous communities around Queensland about the impacts of alcohol use. The programs will explore the health impacts, along with the social and cultural impacts, of alcohol use. They will also focus on information that young people can use, such as how to access help, in order to support each other and to avoid situations that involve binge drinking.
