Overview

This project involved the development of a culturally appropriate Aboriginal suicide prevention training package. The aim of the training package was to support Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal workers to confidently recognize mental disorders and early signs of suicide risk. The training package was developed after extensive consultation with local Aboriginal communities, service providers and stakeholders, and was piloted in Tamworth, New South Wales (NSW).

The training package that was developed:

• is presented by two people (an Aboriginal mental health worker and a mental health clinician)
• is delivered over two days.

Participants in the training receive a work manual that includes:

• definitions
• myths and facts
• warning signs
• risk and protective factors of related illnesses
• tips for working with Indigenous communities
• issues in development of identity and culture
• four scenarios looking at risk
• protective factors and warning signs specifically relating to Aboriginal children, adults and the elderly
• responding to a child at risk
• places to seek assistance and support after a suicide event.
