Overview

This program operates in MacDonnell Shire Council in the southern part of the Northern Territory (NT). The purpose of this training program is to give Indigenous Shire workers the skills to manage community rubbish programs. Shire employees who complete the training receive a certificate-based qualification in Land management and environmental health.

The course covers all aspects of the rubbish cycle, including:

• litter control and the collection of waste
• environmental health strategies, such as preventing seepage of contaminants into groundwater supplies
• MacDonnell Shire Council guidelines for the management of landfill facilities.

The training program was started by MacDonnell Shire Council in 2011, and will eventually be completed by all Shire workers involved in waste management.
