This project aims to decrease rates of sexually transmitted infections and reduce the numbers of low-birth weight babies born to young Indigenous women in the Hume region of Victoria. More broadly, it aims to improve sexual and reproductive health services for these women.

The first stage of this project involved research into existing services, and the writing of recommendations about what was needed to improve services. The second stage of this project will involve actual changes to the way sexual and reproductive health services are delivered.

The activities that took place in the first part of this project were:

• talks with Indigenous women
• talks with health service providers
• mapping of current services
• production of baseline data at a sub-regional level
• a literature review
• writing of recommendations to improve the continuum of antenatal and postnatal care
• development of a comprehensive model of care.
