Kimberley diabetic eye care program

Overview

The Kimberley diabetic eye care program will provide regular eye screening and access to treatment for diabetes sufferers in rural, remote and Indigenous communities in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The aim of the program is to improve screening rates, make laser treatment more accessible and improve education and awareness to reduce the number of people experiencing vision loss.

The program will collaborate closely with Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council (KAMSC), local optometrists and country hospitals. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Eye Foundation and the Lion's Eye Institute provided the initial three years of funding for the program in 2011.
