Remote Indigenous energy program

Overview

The Remote Indigenous energy program aims to help Indigenous communities access affordable and reliable 24-hour power supplies, contributing to an improvement in health, education and long-term economic capabilities. The program will start in 2012 and provide funding to install renewable energy generation systems in approximately 50 remote Indigenous communities over the life of the program. Training in basic system maintenance and the provision of information for energy efficient practices to encourage ongoing energy management will also be included. This program will build on the Bushlight program which has provided reliable and affordable renewable energy systems to very remote Indigenous communities. The Australian Government has invested $40 million in this program.
