The Department of Transport began operations on 1 July 2009, after the former Department for Planning and Infrastructure was split into 3 new agencies: the Department of Planning, the Department of Transport and the Department of Regional Development and Lands.

The Department of Transport focuses on strategic transport planning and policy across the range of public and commercial transport systems that service Western Australia.

Licensing Services is part of the Department of Transport, and manages a diverse range of licensing functions - from cars, drivers, motorcycles, mopeds, caravans, trailers, taxis and buses to mobile cranes, earth movers and road trains.
