Western Australian AIDS Council (WAAC)
Description
The Western Australian AIDS Council (WAAC) seeks to enhance the quality of life of people living with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS and minimise the further transmission of HIV, hepatitis C, and sexually transmissible infections. The Council provides a comprehensive range of services including:
- A Positive Services Program that provides practical, physical, and emotional care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and their family, carers, and partners;
- A needle and syringe exchange service;
- Testing services for gay men and men who have sex with men;
- A Freedom Centre whereby young people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning can access peer support and information;
- AIDSLine - a confidential and anonymous telephone service that provides information, education, and referral;
- Community education and prevention services for specific groups of individuals. An example includes the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Development Project that is concerned with providing holistic and culturally appropriate services to Indigenous peoples throughout Western Australia; and
- Training and professional development opportunities.
