Department of Justice, NT
Description
The Department of Justice in the Northern Territory (NT) delivers a range of services to build a safe, fair and just Territory. It incorporates all elements of the public justice system with the exception of policing and also has a strong regulatory role. The Department of Justice's work includes:
- racing, gaming and licensing
- alcohol policy
- justice and the office of the Attorney-General
- correctional services.
Northern Territory Correctional Services is part of the Department of Justice. It works in partnership with the community and is committed to delivering a correctional service that contributes to individual and community safety by:
- ensuring the effective management of prisoners and juvenile detainees during their period of imprisonment or detention and support the reduction of the likelihood of their re-offending through the provision of effective rehabilitation and reintegration programs and services
- ensuring the provision of assessment, monitoring and supervision services to community based adult and juvenile offenders in line with orders as directed by the courts and the parole board
- ensuring that a range of rehabilitation and reparation programs are available to sentenced prisoners and community based offenders which encourage them to become socially responsible members of the community
- developing, managing and operating systems that are effective in achieving their objectives, competitive in performance and cost, responsive to changing needs and accountable for results.
