Description

The MJD Foundation was established in 2008 and seeks to improve the quality of life for Indigenous Australians and their families living with Machado Joseph Disease (a neuro degenerative, hereditary condition), in Arnhem Land and beyond. Their activities are focused on Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island, and they also provide services to other affected areas of the Northern Territory.

The Foundation provides practical solutions which include:

• education
• training
• research
• equipment
• support
• advocacy
• improved services.

Some of the Foundation's current initiatives include:

• the provision of genetic education to families and community
• the provision of genetic education to health professionals
  
• working within communities to understand MJD
• training care workers and family carers.
