Wurrimiyanga (Nguiu) Wellbeing Centre

 

Description

Opened in 2009, the Wurrimiyanga Wellbeing Centre is a purpose-built facility that promotes mental wellness and good health in the local community. It is an initiative of the people of Wurrimiyanga (previously known as Nguiu), and was built, designed, and named in consultation with the community. The Centre was partly developed as a response to local concerns about the high suicide rate in Wurrimiyanga, which in early 2000 was 10 times higher than the national average.

The Centre offers a blend of modern and traditional solutions to mental health problems. Its services are intended to help local people stay strong and understand and prevent mental illness. In addition to mental health services, the Centre also offers socially and culturally appropriate programs in sexual, environmental, and public health.
