Target audience: People working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who would like to encourage them to quit smoking
Course summary: This course is a nationally recognised training opportunity which focuses on smoking cessation. The training provides participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to think about their smoking and make some changes. There are three course components, the main Quitskills training courses, a Quitskills refresher course, and Quitskills motivational interviewing training.
Quitskills is a three-day competency based training opportunity, where, after successful completion of the training, participants will receive an academic transcript from TAFE South Australia (SA) for the following competencies:
The Quitskills refresher course is for people who have previously completed the main Quitskills course, and would like an update of the latest information on tobacco cessation. It is a one-day training opportunity that provides:
The Quitskills motivational interviewing training is a two-day competency based training opportunity which aims to enhance basic skills in motivational interviewing and how to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to think about their smoking and make some changes. Upon completion of the training participants will receive one unit of competency from Tafe SA. This competency combined with the three Quitskills competencies is recognised as an academic smoking cessation skill set.
Although the Quitskills courses are run out of the Cancer Council SA, these training opportunities are available across Australia.
Fee payable: Free to anyone who works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
