Overview

Target audience: Aboriginal Health workers in tobacco control organisations, or within other community settings, including those who do not have prior qualifications, or who are seeking a career transition to tobacco related work. Aboriginal community members who are seeking to join the health workforce are also welcome to enrol.

Course summary: This course will develop knowledge and skills for Aboriginal Health Workers and other health professionals providing information on smoking and smoking cessation programs. The content includes:

• treatment and management of nicotine dependence
• the quitting process
• behavioural interventions such as brief advice
• counselling and intensive support
• nicotine replacement therapies and prescription pharmacotherapies
• working with families
• working with complexity
• health promotion in communities and in the workplace.
