This course is specifically designed for community mental health workers, alcohol and other drug (AOD) workers, or workers in the community sector who are in a mental health role. The purpose of the course is to enhance the ability of staff to work with clients whose needs are complex and diverse.
This course contains the same material as the Mental Health Coordinating Council's Diploma of community services (mental health) (see links below), but includes an additional four days' tuition to enable participants to achieve a dual mental health and AOD qualification.
The course contains 19 compulsory units, and covers counselling, referral, advocacy, and education/health promotion services. It requires high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies, especially in regard to: laws affecting clients; the range of services available to clients; and health issues related to mental health and AOD use and misuse.
