Overview

Target audience: Non-Indigenous primary health care providers, mental health care practitioners, mental health service providers, child protection staff, justice and corrections staff, and program and practice administrators

Course summary: This course provides participants with an insight into the complex social and emotional issues faced by Aboriginal survivors of forcible removal (Stolen generations). The workshop aims to provide non-Aboriginal service providers with the skills and knowledge required to detect and respond appropriately to issues associated with forcible removal - from crisis intervention to supporting survivors to 'heal' from their experiences. Course content includes:

• the historical context of forcible removal of Aboriginal children
• the impact of forcible removal on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal individuals, families, and communities
• insights into the trauma associated with forcible removal
• potential 'triggers' which may reactivate the trauma associated with forcible removal
• the potential for misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment
• trans-generational effects of forcible removal
• how to respond appropriately and sensitively to meet the needs of survivors of forcible removal (Stolen generations).
