Overview

This short course is being run by Menzies School of Health Research. It will provide an introduction to the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health promotion programs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Topics to be covered:

• The context of Aboriginal health past/present/future
• Advocacy for health in the community
• Knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about health in Indigenous communities
• Design and development of health promotion education and resources
• Introduction to health promotion theory and methods
• Planning, monitoring and implementing health promotion programs
• Community profiles identifying health needs in the community
• Case studies - what works?
• Prioritising health needs in the community
• Feedback and community involvement

The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of suitable strategies and techniques to be achieved by an introduction to conceptual and practice-based literature, field documentation, research reports and mass media knowledge, direct observation and an analytical reflection on present practice.
